I remember a recent Chinese film where a Chinese archeologist is arguing with an English aristocratic woman (modern day), where she is attacking her over the looting and damage. The English woman explains that it was a different time, and there were different rules then, and that it was done in retaliation for killing and torture of British citizens (its pretty brutal what was done to the civilians and Sikh soldiers if you look it up). The Chinese woman then says something like “So you think a few human lives are worth more than precious artifacts!?”

And the viewer is supposed to be on the side of the Chinese

The reason the palace was looted, was because the British wanted to punish the Chinese royalty for what happened, not the Chinese people. You have to remember that these days we see things like the Summer Palace as belonging to the people and the nation, but back then these things just belonged to the royal family.

What the British and French did in China, burning the old Summer Palace, was unfortunate, but was in revenge for the death under torture of British prisoners. But the worst humanitarian disaster was caused by one of their own people...a certain Mao Zedong (Tse-Tung), who caused about 45 million deaths and whose Red Guards destroyed mountains of artworks etc. Mankind is monstrous and will always steal, kill and destroy. It's still happening today.

We must acknowledge US President Richard M. Nixon as the principal visionary and main driving force behind the US rapprochement with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1972. Although he had a reputation as an arch anti-Communist, Nixon saw that peace and stability in the world could not be achieved without the active participation of the PRC and its then 800M people. He clearly articulated this point in his 1967 Foreign Affairs article “Asia after Vietnam” which was published before he became the US President. In 1969 when Nixon took office, official US policy was to isolate, contain and ignore “Red China” (as the PRC was then called in the US). This was the consensus view of the US Foreign Policy Establishment and the US Political Establishment, including that of the Republican Party. Although the logic of normalizing relations with the PRC was eminently obvious—after all the Communists did win the Chinese Civil War—the US political Establishment was dead set against it. Even senior diplomat George F. Kennan (who later warned that expanding NATO would result in war with Russia) counseled Nixon NOT to re-open relations with the PRC. Conservative politicians, including Sen.

Barry Goldwater and California Governor Ronald Reagan and influential commentators such as William F. Buckley strongly opposed opening relations with “Red China.” When Nixon first told Kissinger in January 1969 that he wanted to open relations with the PRC, Kissinger initially said that Nixon was crazy. However, it didn’t take too much convincing for Kissinger to see the obvious logic and advantages of normalizing relations with the PRC. Nixon had to do a tremendous amount of political work to mollify the Conservatives, and convince the Political Establishment as well as the American people that re-establishing relations with the PRC was the right thing to do. His 1972 visit to China was carefully choreographed as a media campaign to make the case to the American people for normalizing relations with the PRC. At the time, this was extremely politically risky and could have easily backfired. There were many people in the US State Department who wanted to derail Nixon’s efforts, including Marshall Green, US Deputy Secretary of State. But Nixon and his team pulled it off. None of this is to diminish or belittle the contribution of Mr. Kissinger, whose efforts and expertise were critical in re-establishing relations with China. A lesser diplomat could not have done it. But Mr. Kissinger’s job in negotiating with Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong was the relatively easy part. The difficult part was convincing a large number of important and influential people in the US Political Establishment to change their minds about “Red China.” Richard Nixon did the political heavy lifting required to make that happen.

China's government is really interesting. Their government, like the US government, is broken down into levels: National > Provincial > District > City/Town/Village. At the lowest level, officials are elected democratically to govern and represent the village or city. They then get "promoted' up the levels based on their performance at the lower levels till they get appointed to the national level of government by the chairman. It's nice because everyone enters the government through democratic election, but no one can jump straight to the national level without first showing competence at the lower levels, so everyone running the country at the national level all understand from experience how the government operates at every level and, as a result, they are good at delegating power out to the lower levels. For a country of over 1.2 billion people, it's definitely an efficient form of government.

An important thing to add is that the president of China isn't always the man in charge. The real power in communist China resides in the standing committee of the politburo (or the leadership of the communist party). All other parts of the Chinese government are merely there to approve off what the politburo decides, to create legitimacy. The president only has power if he is a member of the politburo, like Mao Zedong and Xi Jinping, without power in the politburo they are extremely weak. To become a member of the politburo someone must become a member of the communist party and rise through the ranks using guanxi (good personal relations with higher leadership).

Oh this video is dead wrong. China is just an authoritarian version of global centrist trend, including Democratic and Republican establishment and essentially most traditional political parties. China is nothing like North Korea, because the Chinese government is strictly capitalist, while the North Korean bureaucrats are not allowed to push for pro-market reforms(which benefit themselves primarily) because that threatens Kim's power. So Chinese government is in collusion with global capitalists and capitalist nations like the US, while North Korea is doing everything to prevent global capitalism from toppling it... this video tbh looks like its made by some 10 year old kid.

I think most western people know little about China. In China, the most important thing is to develop economy. A stable social environment is the basis of economic growth. The single party is the most effective way to realize rapid economic growth and social stability. In such a complex world, the concept of democracy is a little bit outmoded. Chinese government is run by engineers, while US is run by lawyers. Chinese leaders are handpicked based on their previous performance (GDP mostly) while US leaders are elected based on their speech ability. Which one will produce better results in the long run? I think it's quite obvious.

I am an indian. And democracy sucks here. To take any decision , it takes 50 years here. You can take decision only when there is a majority party. Decision making process is always hindered by opposition for the sake of appeasement of their vote banks. Communist china has lifted 300 millions people out of poverty. India has pushed 100 millions into poverty. Only idiots become leaders in democracy.
